A bio-tech incubator in Natick, ABI-LAB, is expanding. According to its owners, there is no place like it in MetroWest.

NATICK — Gary Kaufman knows why his business is successful.

“I put in my own money,” Kaufman said. “No grants, no government money. That would take too long.”

Kaufman made the statement minutes after dozens of medical technology professionals toured his business, ABI-LAB, located on Strathmore Road in Natick.

The MetroWest Life Sciences Network took the group on a bus tour of MetroWest last month to tout the area as an attractive place to do business, and the last stop was ABI-LAB.

It’s a building that houses 18 small labs in what the industry calls a “biotech incubator.” That’s a fancy term for small, start- up labs that desire affordable rent, and the chance to develop products that help mankind, attract investors and turn a profit.
