Our Story

ABI-LAB is a cutting edge incubator for research and biotechnology companies to work, grow and thrive.

ABI-LAB started with one success story that went on to inspire a business model and then an entire company.

Dr. Raphael Nir, current co-founder of ABI-LAB, became a founding partner of what was to become Karyopharm Therapeutics after their vision being pitched on the back of a napkin. Karyopharm is now traded on NASDAQ and has two therapies approved by the FDA for multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Emboldened by these achievements, Dr. Nir teamed up with Gary Kaufman, current co-owner of ABI-LAB, to build a business model and ecosystem to help the next generation of biotech companies break barriers in their research. The 27 Strathmore building was purchased, renovated and quickly filled with 17 companies. Eager to expand and work with more companies, Nir & Kaufman partnered up with HC Atlantic, run by David Cohen Pratt—and from there, ABI-LAB 2 was built from the ground up. The second facility quickly filled up with 25 research companies in less than two years from being constructed. The third facility is in development stage and anticipates opening in 2023.

ABI-LAB’s mission is to shorten the process of early stage and newer expanding life sciences companies by removing operational and financial obstacles. We’re proud to be able to tell our tenants that they can “Move in today, start your science tomorrow.” Our team works with our tenants to create conscious designs that can optimize the company’s workflow. Once we welcome a new company, we become a partner with them in their success, working tirelessly to allow their team to focus on research while we handle the rest.

Facilities Data 

ABI-LAB 1 is a 17,000 square foot facility that offers private suites and office space for companies whose spaces range in size, and average at 500 sq ft. In realizing the potential for lab suites, ABI-LAB 2 was completed in January of 2020. ABI-LAB 2 offers a 68,000 sq ft, BSL2, state of the art facility to companies who require approx. 800 sq ft–2,000 sq ft or more.
